The perfect cellphone (revisited)

Evolution of the mobile phone

In April 2008, Laurie and I were on the search for new cellphones. We both ended up with a BlackBerry Curve, which met almost every thing on my dream list at the time.

I went on and upgraded to a newer BlackBerry Curve and she moved to the iPhone 3G.

And now I’m sporting a G1 running Froyo after my BlackBerry took a nose dive on our new tile floor.

I try not to be too picky about my cellphones, but for the initial (and monthly) cost, I do have my preferences.

So I think its time to upgrade my wishlist for the perfect cellphone (especially considering with the recent advances in phones like iPhone 4, Evo 4G and Droid X) in hopes that some carrier and manufacturer will get this all together by the time my contract is up in April 2011.

  • 4G
  • Android 2.2+ operating system (without the annoying manufacturers overlay themes or software that blocks features within stock Android)
  • An ethically produced phone – all the way down to the plastics, coltran and manufacturing
  • An eco friendly phone – throughout the entire life-cycle of the phone
  • Wi-Fi
  • GPS
  • 1 ghz+ processor
  • 64 GB+ internal memory
  • MicroSD/SD card external memory
  • 8-megapixel camera with LED flash and 720p HD video capture
  • HD video playback
  • HDMI output
  • Front-facing camera for Skype video chat via 3G and/or Wi-Fi (who needs Facetime?)
  • A standard headphone jack (vs the really odd USB plug the G1 uses)
  • 8+ hour data/Wi-Fi time battery (Most batteries are ranked on talk time — I rarely talk 8 hours on my phone in one month. So talk time is nice, but I don’t want my battery draining simply because I use Wi-Fi, GPS, or data throughout the day either.)
  • Slide out keyboard – the speech to text feature in Android 2.2 is amazing, but it’s still not as fast as typing out an e-mail on the G1’s slide out keyboard… especially when you’re in public and you don’t want the rest of the world to hear what you’re texting
  • An amazing non-contract plan like Virgin Mobile’s $25 for 300 minutes plus unlimited messaging, email and data

As of today, AT&T isn’t offering a “top of the line” Android phone (or 4G) and really no one else is offering both an amazing Android phone with no contract or the great rates like Virgin Mobile — but perhaps someone will have it all ready for me by the time my contract is up next April.

Who’s it gonna be?

What’s on your list?
