Resolve to be a better parent in 2010

Matthew and his new train set

Yes, it sounds a little funny for me to resolve to do that – I’m not exactly a parent yet.

But as things keep progressing along in our foster care process (we had our home study yesterday – WOOT WOOT!) I’m definitely paying closer attention to foster/adoption/parenting issues and ideas.

Lifehack.org has offered up a great list of 10 things children want from their parents.

You see, every Mother’s Day I would ask my students to give me advice on being a mother. They were to think about things their mother or guardian did for or with them that made them feel happy or loved… Year after year, in every country I taught, and in every type of demographic, the students were saying the same things and had the same message: It’s the small things that their mothers did that meant the most and that they remembered.

Here’s the list:

  • Come into my bedroom at night, tuck me in and sing me a song. Also tell me stories about when you were little.
  • Give me hugs and kisses and sit and talk with me privately.
  • Spend quality time just with me, not with my brothers and sisters around.
  • Give me nutritious food so I can grow up healthy.
  • At dinner talk about what we could do together on the weekend.
  • At night talk to me about about anything; love, school, family etc.
  • Let me play outside a lot.
  • Cuddle under a blanket and watch our favorite TV show together.
  • Discipline me. It makes me feel like you care.
  • Leave special messages in my desk or lunch bag.

I think my sisters and I would both say that one of the most memorable things our dad did while growing up was rocking us to sleep singing various hymns. And mom was always great at writing us little notes – especially on holidays and birthdays in our lunches or with breakfast. She always had a way of making little holidays special.

So what advice do you have for a “soon to be parent”? What little things do you remember your parents doing that made a big impact on you?

Thoughts on St. Peter’s Brewery

Just received this via email from a good friend…

JB….I got past all the holiday company and finished your book last night…a few thoughts:

1. I was very impressed with the depth of character development all the way though…especially Jimmy, GT, Kim, and Eddie…..but Pete was my favorite BARNABAS of the bunch.

2. I also thought you did a great job of developing the threads of multiple themes…you had to think way ahead to do that and weave it all together!

3. Of course the obvious message about discovering faith-life through authentic relationships was crystal clear and effectively communicated too.

4. Most importantly, someone with a gift for writing like this needs to do it for a lifetime….I know you stir the water in lots of arenas, but my opinion is that this area is a calling for you. The pen is still mightier than the sword! This type writing gives you room to develop ideas/personalities/core values that goes much further than the typical blog. I know you seek to follow HIM and will do that well….but, I believe HE has given you an unusual talent, a “sword”, for advancement of the Kingdom.

Thanks so much for the kind words!

If you’ve read the book (or are reading the book) I’d love to get your thoughts as well – good or bad. What do ya think? What’s challenging you? What questions are coming to the forefront?

Wrestling, Faith & Science

Double head lock

It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything about the squared-circle.

But Tripp posted a great find over at Homebrewed Christianity in which “Wofford college professors Byron R. McCane and Dan Mathewson reveal how the equally toothless performances of New Atheists like Richard Dawkins and creationists like Ken Ham share more with the garish world of Hulk Hogan and the Iron Sheik than with serious scholarship.”

It’s a great paper piece that compares the one-sided, over stereotypical and simplified views of Ham (Creation Science Museum) and Dawkins to Hulk Hogan and Stone Cold Steve Austin.

Lots of fun. I give it five Ric Flair “WOOOOOOOO’s”

What do you think? Do Dawkins and Ham respresent over stereotypical and simplified views or science and religion at it’s best?

What are your New Year’s Eve plans?

New Year’s Eve is just days away.

And with the possible threat of a snow storm on it’s way into town, we definitely don’t want a repeat of Christmas Eve (an hour and half drive from Garland to Red Oak in the freezing snow and rain).

So, as of now I think we’ll be sticking around the house, probably loading up on a couple Red Box/iTunes movies and enjoying a quiet evening to ourselves.

What about you? What are your plans for New Year’s Eve?

I used to think I listened to a broad range of music — but after working up a list of my favorite songs from 2009, either my preferred listening tastes are getting more defined — or perhaps 2009 just wasn’t a great year for new music. (Feel free to offer up your own theories.)

Ten spots filled by six different artists. It’s not as diverse as some, but it’s my list and what I’ve been enjoying this year.

Honorable mention:
Knights Of Cydonia – Muse :: this track came out in 2006, but I didn’t find it (or them really) until I saw them open for U2 in Houston. My Muse station has now become one of my favorite stations on Pandora and this track quickly became one of my favorite tracks. See the video on Hulu.

Laundry Love 2009 re-cap

Laundry Love Red Oak

In 2009 we kicked off our Laundry Love effort in May.

It’s been an amazing eight months and every month we walk away with another great memory and story and several new friends.

If nothing else, I love how Laundry Love helps make friends out of strangers.

On average we help 15-20 individuals and families each month, spending anywhere from $60 – $120 a month.

We’ve stuffed over 2500 quarters into laundry machines, helping over 120 individuals and families.

I just want to say a huge thanks to everyone who’s supported our efforts along the way. Looking forward to even more fun in 2010.

And if you’d like to get involved, we’d love to have you come join us the last Saturday of every month, or you can donate online as well.

Thanks again!

What project did you start in 2009 that you’ll continue on with in 2010?
